e Kerowagi District is strategically located in the Central Highlands Region. To the south
and east are all the rest of the districts of Simbu and the Eastern Highlands Province while
to the west are the five Highlands provinces. Electricity from Yonki and telephone lines are
transmitted along the Okuk Highway that passes through the Kerowagi District. Goods and
services, including people travelling to those provinces also pass through the District.
Most parts of the Simbu Province’s topography are mountainous, rocky and rugged but
Kerowagi remains the only District that has fertile valley plains extending from the Wahgi
Valley, naturally creating a hub for increased food and cash crop production. The District
has a reservoir of youth energy and potential of more than 36% that can be used and
deployed to productive economic and social activities and outcomes. The strategic location
of the District and the establishment of key economic enablers will bring more investments,
trade and services hence realizing the longer term vision to become the Central Highlands
Free Economic Hub.
Despite its strategic location and potentials, the district remains underdeveloped for obvious
reasons. As such, most people living in the District’s four LLGs continue to have limited
access to basic fundamental services.
