There are 232 Education establishments in the District starting from elementary to college
(Don Bosco Technical College) and enrolls around 22,000 students. There is a total of over
660 teachers in these schools. About 70% of the schools are run by the Government and
30% by the churches. Approximately 20% of the schools have permanent structures while
the rest are semi-permanent or bush material buildings. Most of the church run schools are
generally in respectable condition whilst some Government run schools have deteriorating
infrastructure and facilities

Elementary and Primary Schools
There are 221 elementary, lower and upper primary schools in the District. Six of them are
new elementary schools that are yet to be registered. Upper Lower Koronigle has the highest
number of elementary schools with 36, followed by Gena Waugla with 26, Kup with 25 and
the Kerowagi Urban has 2 elementary schools. Bunamugl Primary School has grades three
to six classes only while the 35 upper primary schools accommodate grades 3 to 8 with
most of the schools again in Upper Lower Koronigle LLG with 13.

• Technical Vocational Education Training Schools
There are eight (8) Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) schools in the District.
Six are run by the Government and two are run by the Catholic Church. Kup and Binde
Goma TVET got registered in 2017 while the rest are operating schools.
These institutions are very critical to accommodate the increasing number of young
population in the District that miss out on advancing to further levels of education. It
provides the avenue for them to obtain technical skills training that will enhance them to
contribute to the development of their District and the Province, and also improve their
wellbeing.

• College/Tertiary Institutions
The National Government in partnership with the Catholic Church has given approval
recently for the existing Catholic Church run Don Bosco Technical College at Migende to
be elevated to a University status so students can continue from elementary to university
in their own District. This is an excellent partnership between the Government and the
Catholic Mission to drive effective delivery of education services in the District. Over this
Plan period, capacity building and rehabilitation of institution facilities need to be done at
the Don Bosco Technical College in order to strengthen facilities needed to become a fully
operational University.
